Can You Take Paracetamol When Pregnant?

paracetamol during pregnancy

Back pain and leg cramps are very common during pregnancy. Most women prefer consuming paracetamol upon the doctor’s advice. Although it is widely known the paracetamol can cross the human placenta, it has not been proven that it causes any fatal or even slight fetal complications for that matter. For this reason, paracetamol is a widely used analgesic drug to help maintain the pains during pregnancy.

Uses of paracetamol during pregnancy

Back pain

  • It is most commonly consumed to reduce backache.
  • Studies have shown that more than 50% of women pregnant have taken paracetamol after it was prescribed by the doctor to reduce and manage back pain.

Fever

  • Although a very small percentage, but pregnant women with fever symptoms have also found relief by consuming paracetamol.

Toothache

  • Around 16.7% of women who have experienced toothache consumed paracetamol during their pregnancies.

Abdominal pain

  • Pregnant women who experience abdominal pain and cramps were prescribed paracetamol every day till the pain was manageable.

The percentage of paracetamol intake due to the above reasons was similar in the next two trimesters also.

Lastly, there is a small percentage of pregnant women with bad pregnancy symptoms required to consume paracetamol throughout their pregnancy to manage pains.

Conclusion

Although pregnant women are advised to be careful about what drugs they consume, paracetamol is every doctor’s recommendation. It helps to manage not only backache but also abdominal cramps, colds, fever, and even toothache. It is mostly prescribed as an SOS but it is one of the safest analgesic drugs.
